Victory For Drummond -Derek McLean Memorial Race Open Graded week 2
The highlight of the second Open Graded Meeting organised by the club at the EEHLC on Tuesday 31st August was the victory of Callum Drummond in the Derek McLean Memorial race . In an exciting finish the first two runners could not be split on time with Callum Drummond of Shettleston given the verdict over Laim McLoone of Victoria Park Glasgow . Both boys ran lifetime bests of 2.05.9mins . All eight boys who made the final were presented with a tee-shirt and the first three with a cash prize .
It was fitting a member of the host club retained the trophy won last year by AAA 1500m champion Ahmad Hassan .This race has been run for many years in memory of a talented endurance Derek McLean who died at a early age of cancer . It has become a highly prized trophy with only the best U/15 athletes being invited to take part .Callum was delighted to win the trophy and also with his PB.
Other highlights of the event was an excellent sprint from Stephen .Nugent over 100m in 11.9secs U/15 athlete Mhairi Hendry 59.3 secs over 400m both of these being Gold Standard performances .The fine weather allowed many of our athletes to achieve PB performances. These meetings could not occur without the help of many people both within the club and from outside .The club is very grateful to our starter over the two meetings Angus Cameron for his continual support for our meetings over a number years .The meetings this year have been some of the best in terms of performance .Last week Dan Mulhare ran the fasted 5000m in Scotland for 8 years ,in the same race Beth Potter went 4th in UK rankings for U/20 over the distance . Grant Muir ,Giffnock North, scored a great double winning the A 800m & 1500m over the two weeks .He also produced fast times which has moved him near the top of the UK rankings. Congratulations to all the athletes ,coaches ,parents and officials who put in the effort to make the meetings such a success . Pictures on our Gallery page...See you next year !

Lanarkshire Championships, Wishaw, 28 August
Shettleston Harriers won 21 individual titles at the Lanarkshire championships at Wishaw on Saturday. This is the time of the year all athletes are chasing fast times before winter arrives. Unfortunately strong winds stopped this for many athletes, especially the sprinters.
This did not stop U13 athlete Jill Cherry winning three titles - the 100m, the 200m and the long jump. New sprinting sensation Stephen Nugent scored a double in the U15 boys 100m & 200m. Young Stephen took up athletes less than a month ago and his early form suggests that, with a winter's training behind him, more titles will come his way. Senior John Ruddy also scored the 100m/200m double, with Alana Sinclair just missing out on her double in the U17s when placing 2nd in the 100m.
The wind did not seem to affect the 800m and 1500m athletes as badly, with Daniel Tolland winning his first LAAA title in a new PB of 2.28.2 just ahead of club mate Euan Penrice who ran 2.30.7. The Penrice family had a successful day with older sister Laura winning the 1500m and placing 2nd in the 800m behind AAAs finalist Mhairi Hendry. Fellow AAAs competitor Stella Winters picked up the U17 girls title in 2.25.4, sprinting clear in the 2nd lap. Victoria McGloin secured a PB in this race of 2.31.8.
The 1500m events were also a good hunting ground for club medals, with Shannon McClellan running yet another PB ( 4.48.4 ) when winning the U17 1500m . When finishing 3rd in the U15 girls 1500m, Caitlin Hackett also won her first LAAA medal. Having just missed the final of the AAAs championships in Bedford last weekend, Callum Drummond won the U15 title in 4.34.4.
Full Lanarkshire Results can be found here...........
In the last few weeks our young throwers have shone brightly with Nicola Mackay winning the National title and breaking the 10m barrier last week in Bedford. Along with Ben Main and Nicky Stone in the Hammer the three of them won their LAAA titles. Nicky also added the Shot title to his collection. Early next month he will represent Scotland, along with club mate Paddy O'Donnell (Pole Vault), in the UK School Games in Gateshead .
Stuart Anderson's long jump group have also shown a lot of promise this year and they won two golds and a silver at the championships. Jill Cherry is ranked second in Scotland this year and with Ashley Anderson winning Gold in the Long Jump and silver in the 200m and Andrew Divers also picking up the silver, it was good day for Stuart.
Many thanks to all the club officials who helped on the day and Walter Ewing for organising the event.
Paisley Vision 10km 2010 and Mens League
Tesgai Tewelde repeated last year's performance when outsprinting Tsegezab Woldemichael to win the Paisley Vison 10km in 30.17secs. A strong head wind slowed the runners on the course but the two Shettleston runners were 2mins clear of the 3rd placed David Millar of Irvine. Paul Sorrie of the club was fourth and with Denis Williams in the top 15 the club won the team title from Kilbarchan AAC.
Clyde Marwick was the unlucky Shettleston runner to lose out on the team prize, being the 5th counter. Lyndsey MacNeill and Avril Mason made sure the men did not get all the limelight finishing 2nd and 4th in the ladies race, with Avril securing a new PB in difficult conditions. Next week sees the highlight of the road running season with the Bank of Scotland Half Marathon and 10km races in Glasgow.

2010 Scottish League Men's disappointment
For the only 2nd time in the 38 year history of the League Shettleston have been relegated to Division 2. On finishing 7th today and 7th overall it was a dark day for the club. The aim must be to bounce straight back to Division 1, and the work starts today!
Open Graded Meeting, 31 August

Open Graded meeting and Adrian Callan trophy, 24 August
Record participation at the Open Graded meeting and excellent performances were the order of the day on Tuesday evening. The fastest 5000m for 8 years in Scotland was won by Dan Mulhare (Inverclyde and Ireland) in 14.04.5. This was part of the 5000m supported by Shettleston Harriers to give athletes the opportunity to run in a paced race. Excellent pacemaking by Amanuel Hagos on a cold windy night meant the performance by Dan was even more worthy of praise .He broke clear with 2 laps to go and piled on the pace to win from Teweldeberhan Mengisteab (14.20.7).
British International athlete Beth Potter was the first female, running 16.32.5.
British International athlete Beth Potter was the first female, running 16.32.5.
Whilst the race was on, a special presentation was made to Shannon McLellan by the daughter of the late Adrian Callan. Shannon becomes the first winner of the Adrian Callan Trophy, by winning the club cross country championships for her age group, U17. Adrian was a key member of the club's successful team of the 1990's and an international standard athlete. He would have made his mark in the 5000m being a sub 14minute man at his best .He was also the last Scot to break the magical 4minutes for the mile on home soil. It was with great sadness to everyone who knew him that he was taken from us early in life.

The Derek McLean memorial race
The Annual Derek McLean Memorial race heats have been held, and the final will take place next Tuesday (Aug 31st) .This U/15 race over 800m is contested each year to remember one of the club's most promising U/15 athletes whose life was cut short by cancer. The top 20 U/15 athletes in Scotland over 800/1500m are invited to take part . Heat winners were - Stuart McLachlan (Law) in 2.08.1 and Dougie Britton (Giffnock North) in 2.10.5 .It looks set for an exciting final this week!
Grant Muir of Giffnock North made light of the windy conditions to run a PB and fast 800m in 1.53.4 seconds. Grant has had a impressive season - he was one of the athletes along with a number of Shettleston athletes who was supported by the GAA during the winter in the Lotto Cross Races in Belgium. Full results of the Open Graded meeting are available on the club website and the Scottish Athletics website.
The club would like to thank all the officials, athletes and parents for making the meeting such a success.
