Results Roundup and International success

New Scottish Record for Angus McInroy -Donnas ( Italy )
Angus McInroy became the second Shettleston athlete to book his place in the Commonwealth Games team in Delhi ,India in October . The selectors must be impressed  by his performance tonight ( Sat 10th July ) in Donnas , Italy when he broke the Scottish Record which has stood since 1991 . His 58.77m was a just reward for all his hard work and his coach Hugh Murray must be delighted with the improvement Angus has made this Summer . The pressure is now off gaining the Commonwealth qualifying distance for the second time . Congratulations from all the club .

Young Athletes League - Grangemouth 4th July
In a disappointing finish to our League Campaign the Young athletes failed to qualify for the final  in August . The athletes competing at the match battled in vain and produced many fine performances  but with athletes  missing for a variety of reason qualification was never on .Full results and standards update are available on site . Special note must be made of young Harrier star Ahmed Hassan who recorded 50.7secs to break the YAL record .PB performances by Ashleigh Anderson ( LJ -4.82 ) ,Callum Drummond ( 800m -2.09.78 ) ,Amy Harkins (1200m -4.08.34 ) and silver standard performance of Jill Cherry ( LJ -4.38 ) also merit special note .

Super 8 -Scotstoun  7th July
The Glasgow East team who competed in the opening event of the new Scotstoun Stadium had to settle for 2nd behind a strong Edinburgh team .Shettleston athletes filled 13 of the 16 places in this team . Individual victories for Ahmed Hassan & Nicola Mackay were the highlights of the event .

Ian Borland Award & Kelvin Hall Sports Trust Awards
Matthew Gillespie became the third Shettleston athlete in recent year to be awarded the Ian Borland Award . Angus McInroy and Ally Strange both being previous winners of this . Great company for Matthew to be in as these athletes are in line for their first Commonwealth Games apperance  this year . The Ian Borland award is given to athletes based in Glasgow and also at university in the city .Matthew shared the award with Josephine Moultrie ( CGVP).Both these athletes are among the top juniors in the UK .The awards were made at the recent Super 8 event at Scotstoun.Matthew has celebrated his award with selection for Scotland over 5km (Sunday 11th July )  in the Blackburn International City Centre Race.

Ian Borland was a former international athlete who left a trust to help young athletes development .The club would like to express their thanks for the assistance this has given to all our athletes  and the impact it has made on their development.

Two further Harriers are delighted to receive Kelvin Hall Education Awards -Lachlan Oates and Tsegai Tewlde . This award will help to develop the talents of these young athletes

Glasgow City AC
In the second match of the city's British League club Shettleston athletes helped the city to easily win the match in Bedford .With wins for Tesgezab Woldemichael, Amanuel Hagos ,Allan Mackay  and a fat 3.49..99 over 1500m for Tesgai Tewlde valuable points were scored .

Bahrain -International Children's Games
Two young Shettleston athletes had the experience of their young life's when they competed in the largest sporting gathering outside the Olympic Games in early July . The Middle East Kingdom  of Bahrain played host to the event . Temperatures close to 40 CO had to be coped with but this did not stop Lisa Thompson collecting three medals . Two Bronze medals ( ELY -5.12m and HJ 1.50m ) and a silver  in the 4x100m . Her club mate Mhairi Hendry was unfortunate to be pushed as she came off the final bend in the 800m just as she was making her bid  for medals .Her time of 2.26.06 was below par for her but show had the consolation of being part of the 4x100m silver medal team .We are sure the girls would like to thank Lanarkshire Councils for this fantastic opportunity .

Super 8 and McCains Roadshow, 7 July

Message from Brian Donaldson  at Culture and Sport Glasgow:

"I am sure you are aware that the Super 8 Match takes place in Glasgow on 7th July 2010 between 7 and 9pm.

The Match is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best athletes in Glasgow and Scotland against some world class athletes.

It is also our chance to showcase Scotstoun Stadium to the rest of Britain. In order to do this se at Culture and Sport along with our partners UKA and Fastrack are doing all that we can to pronote the event throughout Glasgow and Scotland. At present we have sold approximately 25% of the Ticket allocation and are hopefull that the Match will be a sell out on the night, even though the 7th July is also a FIFA World Cup Semi-final night.

Next week we are hoping to put together some incentives that will encourage Clubs to promote the Match within themselves and I will be forwarding information to you and your Clubs regarding these incentives. I am keen that some of the incentives are directed at the membership of Glasgow's Athletics Clubs. A full stadium will boost the Glasgow Team greatly. At present we have 8 Glasgow athletes being considered for the Team.

Within the Super 8 there is also a Schools competition which will see three Glasgow Teams (Eastern Glasgow, Southern Glasgow and Western Glasgow) of Under 15 athletes competing against five other Scottish Cities. This will start at 4.30pm and finish at 6.30 pm. I am keen to see this event in action since I think it may be a way to offer competition to younger aged athletes in the future. Between the finish of the Schools' Super 8 and the Senior Match there is also being proposed a four way match, called the Scotstoun Challenge, where Glasgow City AC will take on members of the Glasgow Wildcats; Glasgow Rocks and Glasgow Warriors. This I hope will be slightly different from the usual "mascot race" type event.

With all of the above taking place there is a need for volunteers to assist in the delivery of some of what we are trying to do and Sean has already made contact with the members of the 2014 Squad, the Junior Squad, Glasgow City AC and students from some of the colleges we work with asking if they will be able to assist at the Match in the variety of roles that are required. These roles include;

Liaison to the senior Super 8 Teams
Assistant Managers for the Schools' Super 8
Assistance to the technical aspects of the Match (Results providers etc)
Managing the Scotstoun Challenge Match
Kit Carrying

McCains are also bringing a Roadshow to George Square on 4th July where they are offering Clubs the opportunity to send Club coaches and personnel down to George Square to promote your Club and the Club's activity. This may be an opportuinity for some of your Coaches and/or Junior Athletes to come to George Square and promote your Club on your behalf since I believe there is a Young Athlete Match on elsewhere that day.

I will keep you informed of the ways in which your Club personel can get involved in Super 8 and the McCains Roadshow next week. Information on Super 8 is here.
