Open Graded meeting and Adrian Callan trophy, 24 August

Record participation at the Open Graded meeting and excellent performances were the order of the day on Tuesday evening. The fastest 5000m for 8 years in Scotland was won by Dan Mulhare (Inverclyde and Ireland) in 14.04.5.  This was part of the 5000m supported by Shettleston Harriers to give athletes the opportunity to run in a paced race. Excellent pacemaking by Amanuel Hagos on a cold windy night meant the performance by Dan was even more worthy of praise .He broke clear with 2 laps to go and piled on the pace to win from Teweldeberhan Mengisteab (14.20.7).
British International athlete Beth Potter was the first female, running 16.32.5.
Whilst the race was on, a special presentation was made to Shannon McLellan by the daughter of the late Adrian Callan. Shannon becomes the first winner of the Adrian Callan Trophy, by winning the club cross country championships for her age group, U17. Adrian was a key member of the club's successful team of the 1990's and an international standard athlete. He would have made his mark in the 5000m being a sub 14minute man at his best .He was also the last Scot to break the magical 4minutes for the mile on home soil. It was with great sadness to everyone who knew him that he was taken from us early in life.

The Derek McLean memorial race

The Annual Derek McLean Memorial race heats have been held, and the final will take place next Tuesday (Aug 31st) .This U/15 race over 800m is contested each year to remember one of the club's most promising U/15 athletes whose life was cut short by cancer. The top 20 U/15 athletes in Scotland  over 800/1500m are invited to take part . Heat winners were - Stuart McLachlan (Law) in 2.08.1 and Dougie Britton (Giffnock North) in 2.10.5 .It looks set for an exciting final this week!

Grant Muir of Giffnock North made light of the windy conditions to run a PB and fast 800m in 1.53.4 seconds. Grant has had a impressive season - he was one of the athletes along with a number of Shettleston athletes who was supported by the GAA during the winter in the Lotto Cross Races in Belgium. Full results of the Open Graded meeting  are available on the club website and the Scottish Athletics website.

The club would like to thank all the officials, athletes and parents for making the meeting such a success.

AAA English Championships, Bedford, 21/22 August

Nine young Shettleston athletes made the long journey to Bedford to test themselves against the best England could offer. Ahmed Hassan fulfilled the promise which has won him an array of Scottish National titles when he added the English U/15 boys 1500m Championships.  It has been a frustrating few weeks for Ahmed trying to nurse a leg injury which threatened  to cut short his season.  He made no mistake when sprinting clear in the home straight to win in 4mins 09secs  from the 2nd ranked boy in the UK. Clubmate Callum Drummond ran well to record 4.28.36 in the heats.

Ben Main and Nicola Mackay both broke the club records in the Hammer and Shot respectively when achieving PBs. Ben finished 5th overall in 46.60m and Nicola 8th in 10.21m.
Mhairi Hendry ran her fastest time of the season ( 2.17.27 ) in the U/15 Girls 800m to make the final where she finished 8th. Myrtle Breckenridge, also running the 800m, gained valuable experience in her first year in the age group,  finishing in 2.29.44.

Stella Winters also in first year in the U/17 age group finished 5th overall in 4.44.29 in the girls 1500m .Strong winds slowed all the runners on day one of the championships and then temperatures of 25C on day 2 tested the athletes ability to cope with heat.

U/17 athletes Paddy O'Donnell and Nicky Stone both left the championships slightly disappointed with their performances. Paddy failing at 3.80m in the pole vault to finish on 3.60, over 40cm below his best. Nicky damaged his hammer in round one and never got to grip with the stadium hammer when he finished 13th overall throwing 50.99 - again well below his PB distance .

Coaches , Parents and athletes are to be congratulated on all their efforts during this season. Nine athletes at these championships is a record and the huge commitment in time and money is to be applauded.

3 Shettleston athletes for Delhi, 2 more for Pikes Peak

Many congratulations to Ally Strange, Mark Dry and Angus McInroy whose selection for the Scottish Commonwealth Games team for Delhi in October has now been confirmed.  News story on scottishathletics website here.

Meanwhile, Fiona Maxwell (pictured below) and Iona Robertson, selected to represent Scotland at this year's World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge on 21 August, had mixed fortunes on the day. Fiona ran a strong race to finish 12th, and first female vet.  Iona suffered badly from altitude sickness during the race, but battled bravely on to finish. Her fighting spirit was justly rewarded when the team secured the bronze medal.  The Challenge took place over what is arguably the most famous race route in the United States, Pikes Peak in Colorado. The race is a severe test, as it is uphill only and at altitude, starting at 1920metres and climbing over 2380 metres in 21km to finish on the summit at 4302 metres.  Report by scottishathletics here, and by the World Mountain Running Association here.
