The Tramway theatre was the venue for the Glasgow Sports Awards for 2009. This events highlights the contribution sport makes to Glasgow and to recognise the individuals and clubs who make it possible. The Shettleston party include the club President Raymond Loughran, Secretary Josephine Scally and Cross Country Captain John Mackay. Special Guest of the club Brian Donaldson, Sports Development Athletics Officer Culture and Sport Glasgow also joined the party. A number of athletics represented the club in this glittering awards night hosted by Richard Gordon ( BBC Scotland ).
The club had been nominated in two areas -club of the year and Glasgow Disabled Athlete of the Year ( Allan Stuart ). Leader of the council Steven Purcell and Lord Provost Robert Winter also nominate special awards to clubs and individuals. First award of the night was the Leader's Special Award nominated by Steven Purcell.
As we settled into our seat Lord Provost Robert Winters started to read out the bibliography of the winner...... Since 1904 this club has make a huge contribution to the City of Glasgow. We had won this special award ! What an honour for the club. Cross Country Captain John Mackay accepted the award on the behalf of the members, coaches, parents and sponsors who have contributed to the club over the last 105 years. This award is one of the highest awards the city can give to any organisation and anyone who has been associated with the club should feel proud of their contribution.
The slick presentation format continued at a pace and then the disabled Athlete of the year nominations were read out - Shettleston Harriers Allan Stuart scoped the award for the second time. Allan was a silver medal winner at the Sydney Olympics and has won many European and World Medals in Disability sport. We wish him well in his preparation for London 2012.
After a short break during which we were congratulated by Councilor George Remond , Doug Gillon, Hearld Newspaper and numerous other individuals including Bob Stephen Glasgow Sports Council and Honorary Life Member of the Club, Depute Provost Allan Stuart whose son Craig who had competed for the club .
The club of the year award was a three way contested between West of Scotland Special Olympics Club, Shettleston Harriers and a Judo Club. Reaching the last three was a great result for the club when we consider the 100 's of clubs in Glasgow. This recognises the tremendous improvement we have made over the last few years in regaining our position as one of the top clubs in Scotland and the UK. On this occasion we lost to the West of Scotland Special Olympic club and we send our congratulations to them. We do make a contribution to this club in the inclusive nature we have with some of our members also being members of Red Star AC and the West of Scotland club. As the evening came to the end it was a great feeling to be part of the club and to be recognised for the contribution we have made to young people lives in the East End of Glasgow and to the wider athletics community. We all know this is due to the hard work of all our members and as our club motto states - Nihil Sine Labore ( nothing without work) this will continue.
Congratulations to all who attended the Sports Person of the Year Event
